About half a century ago, in 1948, Valjevo Archives Centre was formed. Its aim was to record and follow the work of important creators of archive material, as well as to put the cultural treasure in one place and protect it. The beginning was modest, in the attic of the Trade Union building, with a couple of volunteers, while today 17 professionally trained workers of the Historical Archives of Valjevo take care of 2,900 meters of material stored in the appropriately arranged space.
     Beside diligent collecting, protecting, professional processing and storing the archive material, the Archives have made enormous contribution to the development of local as well as national historiography, not only by providing researchers with the archive material, but also by organizing research activities and publishing historiographic works.
